As you make the transition to a plant-based diet, finding a good vegan butter can make life feel so much easier!

While you can buy a range of vegan butters at your local grocery store, many of them are filled with unnecessary, not-so-good-for-you ingredients. Plus, why bother when you can easily make your own at home in just 15 minutes using this no-fuss recipe?!

We use a handful of simple, store-bought ingredients to make four sticks of rich and creamy plant-based butter.

The result is a spreadable butter with a comforting flavor, texture, and mouthfeel. It can be used for baking and frying, and it makes the perfect spread for hot toast at breakfast time.

What is Butter?

In some form, butter can actually be traced back around 9,000 years. It’s thought to have been created in Africa, after a sheep herder discovered that warm, curdled milk could be used as a food.

Ancient Africans continued to produce it and, thousands of years later, it is eaten around the world by many different cultures.

Butter is commonly used in baking and frying, while it is also a popular spread or topping for things like toast, sandwiches, pancakes, and waffles.

Is Butter Vegan?

Far from it! In fact, butter is derived entirely from the fats and proteins in dairy milk.

Thankfully, with the rise in veganism (yay!), grocery store refrigerators are now also packed with a wide range of ready-made vegan butters, which means nobody has to miss out on delicious buttery flavors.

Of course, you can also make your own vegan butter following our simple recipe on this page!

Is this Vegan Butter Gluten-Free?

Yes, it is! There are no glutenous ingredients in this recipe.

Is Vegan Butter Easy to Make?

Yes, our vegan butter recipe is incredibly easy to follow.

It takes just 15 minutes to prepare and about an hour to set. Easy peasy.

What is Vegan Butter Made Of?

Our vegan butter is made with just a handful of simple essentials you most likely already have at home. All you need is:

  • Almond milk
  • Lemon juice (or apple cider vinegar)
  • Coconut oil, melted
  • Olive oil
  • Nutritional yeast
  • Salt

How to Make Vegan Butter

To a bowl, add the almond milk and lemon juice, and whisk it together. Let this sit for around 5 minutes until it curdles.

In the meantime, add the coconut oil, olive oil, nutritional yeast, and salt to a blender, and blend until smooth. Add the curdled almond milk, and blend again until everything is incorporated.

Pour the mixture into a butter mold, a ramekin, or a small shallow Mason jar, and transfer to the fridge to set until solid. This takes around an hour.

When you are ready to serve, remove the butter from the fridge and allow it to soften slightly for a few minutes, until it becomes spreadable.

Tips for the Best Vegan Butter

If you don’t like the flavor of coconut oil, use refined coconut oil to avoid your butter tasting like coconut.

Make sure you add the coconut oil to the blender when it is in liquid form at room temperature – don’t add it when it’s hot or hardened.

If you want to give your butter more of a traditional yellow color, you can add a sprinkle of turmeric when blending. Be careful, as a little turmeric goes a long way!

For an extra creamy consistency, cut the sticks of butter into pieces, add them to your food processor, and pulse until it resembles whipped butter. This is by far my favorite way of enjoying it!

Enjoy this butter as a spread for toast, garlic bread, vegan scones, English muffins, or our easy gluten-free pancakes or our banana waffles. You can also try using it as a topping to hot popcorn for your next movie night! YUM.

FAQ

How to Store Vegan Butter

Always store your vegan butter in the refrigerator, where it will last for up to one week.

Can You Freeze Vegan Butter?

Yes! It can be difficult to eat four sticks in one week, so you may want to freeze your vegan butter for later use.

Just keep it in an airtight and freezer-proof container and it will last for up to 2 months. When you are ready to use it, allow it to thaw in the fridge overnight.

You can cut your butter into smaller pieces or fill an ice cube tray to make freezing and thawing an easier process.

Can You Make Vegan Butter Ahead of Time?

Yes, this is a good idea, especially as it takes an hour to set. When it is set, store it in the refrigerator for up to one week until you are ready to use it.

How Long Does Vegan Butter Last?

In the fridge, your vegan butter will last for up to one week. When stored correctly in the freezer, this butter will last for around 2 months.

Is Vegan Butter Healthy?

The word ‘butter’ doesn’t usually conjure up images of health – and for good reason. It’s packed with saturated fat and calories.

Most store-bought vegan butters are not much healthier, with just as much fat, as well as palm oil and emulsifiers.

Our vegan butter is still not considered a health food, although it is considerably healthier than most vegan butters you can buy at the store! It’s made with natural ingredients, no preservatives, and offers vitamins from both the nutritional yeast and lemon juice.

Use it in moderation and it can certainly be a healthier choice! 😊
