What is a Chocolate Chip Cookie?
A chocolate chip cookie is a traditional, staple snack and dessert. It’s so simple – yet a good recipe for vegan chocolate chip cookies needs to tick the right boxes.
For us, the perfect chocolate chip cookie has a lightly browned, slightly crisp edge, with a soft, chewy center, and a rich buttery flavor.
They should never be too puffy or cakey, nor too flat or crumbly. There’s a perfect in-between that is just right.
Are Chocolate Chip Cookies Vegan?
The vast majority of chocolate chip cookies sold are not vegan, as they are made with both eggs and dairy butter.
Instead, in our recipe for vegan chocolate chip cookies, we use applesauce in place of egg (yep, it works perfectly!) as well as vegan butter.
Are these Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies Easy to Make?
YES! These vegan chocolate chip cookies are so incredibly easy to make.
Firstly, no mixer is required. All you need is one regular mixing bowl.
Also, you don’t have to chill the dough for 24 hours. Who has the patience for any longer than that? Sometimes a girl just needs a chocolate chip cookie! This cookie dough needs a very reasonable one-hour chill. ❄️
What are Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies Made Of?
We make these vegan chocolate chip cookies with almond flour, oat flour, vegan butter, applesauce, and a handful of other easy ingredients.
Here’s what you need:
- Vegan butter
- Applesauce
- Date sugar (or monk fruit for sugar-free)
- Vanilla extract (or powder)
- Arrowroot
- Water
- Baking soda
- Salt
- Almond flour
- Oat flour
- Chocolate chips/chunks
How to Make Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies
Start by adding softened vegan butter, applesauce, date sugar (or monk fruit), and vanilla extract to a mixing bowl, then mix everything together.
To a separate bowl, add arrowroot and water, then stir until mixed. Pour this arrowroot and water mixture into the mixing bowl.
Then add the baking soda and salt, and mix. Then add the almond flour and mix. Finally, add in the oat flour and mix again.
Next, fold in chocolate chips/chunks, and transfer to the fridge for an hour before baking. In the meantime, preheat the oven to 350°F.
When you are ready, scoop the cookie dough into even-sized balls and transfer to a cookie sheet.
Using the palm of your hand, gently flatten the tops slightly (although you can skip this step if you prefer fluffy, pillowy cookies!).
Bake on 350°F until golden brown. This takes around 12-15 minutes.
As soon as you take them out, even though they are golden brown, they will be very soft to the touch, so allow them to cool for a few minutes before moving them. They will firm up during this time.
Now they are ready to serve! Grab a couple and a glass of cold plant milk, and enjoy! 🥛
FAQ
How to Store Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies
These vegan chocolate chip cookies can be stored on the counter at room temperature for up to 3 days. For best results, allow them to cool completely then store in an airtight container.
Can You Freeze Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies?
Yes! To freeze these cookies, allow them to cool completely, then transfer them to the freezer on a cookie sheet.
Once frozen, remove the cookies from the freezer, and place them in bags (or a freezer-safe container) with parchment paper between the layers.
Then store them in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Is Chocolate Vegan?
Yes, chocolate can be vegan! This is because chocolate is made from cacao beans, meaning that it’s naturally a plant-based food. 🍫
However, it’s the other ingredients added in during the chocolate-making process that tend to make chocolate non-vegan. These ingredients sometimes include milk, which is obviously not vegan.
Our advice is to always check the ingredient list! Look for chocolate with a small amount of ingredients. The fewer ingredients, the purer the chocolate. Of course, always make sure the ingredients don’t include any animal products!
Where Can I Buy Vegan Chocolate Chips/Chunks?
You can buy vegan chocolate chips or chunks in many grocery stores as well as health food stores and vegan stores. For convenience, you can also buy them online.
Here are some of my favorite vegan chocolate chips to bake with:
- Lily’s Dark Chocolate Chips (these are sugar-free)
- Enjoy Life Dark Chocolate Morsels
- Lakanto Dark Chocolate Chips (also sugar-free)
How are these Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies Healthiir?
Before you eat hundreds of these then complain about weight gain, let’s clarify: cookies are not a health food!
However, our vegan chocolate chip cookies with almond flour, applesauce, and almond milk are certainly a healthier option compared to standard store-bought cookies.
Firstly, this recipe calls for vegan butter instead of dairy. We like to use our own vegan butter recipe, or – if you prefer to buy it – try Miyokos Cultured Vegan Butter, which offers some good quality ingredients.
These cookies also require unsweetened applesauce, which has more fiber and goodness than cholesterol-packed eggs.
Instead of heavily-refined sugar, this recipe uses date sugar, which comes with some added nutrients. To make it sugar-free, you can use monk fruit instead.
Finally, instead of heavily-processed white flour, these cookies use a mix of almond flour and oat flour, which have more nutrients and fiber.
