What is Chocolate Tart?

Chocolate tart is a simple but delicious dessert that combines a thin and crisp crust with a thick and firm chocolate filling (often known as a ganache).

Unlike similar tarts, such as pumpkin pie or pecan pie, chocolate tart is not tied to a single season or holiday (i.e. fall or Thanksgiving).

This means that you can enjoy chocolate tarts all year round, whether that’s Independence Day or Christmas Day!

Is Chocolate Tart Vegan?

Most chocolate tarts are not vegan as they contain eggs, heavy cream, milk, and/or butter, so no – they aren’t typically vegan.

Luckily, these are all easy to replace, meaning our chocolate tart is entirely vegan. We use vegan butter and coconut cream for the creamy filling – no dairy required!

Is this Vegan Chocolate Tart Gluten-Free?

Yes, it can easily be made gluten-free. We use a mix of almond flour and gluten-free flour for the tart crust mixture.

We recommend Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free 1-to-1 baking flour, although any gluten-free flour should work well.

Is Vegan Chocolate Tart Easy to Make?

Generally, yes. It does require some coordination and time in the kitchen, although it’s fairly simple. This process pretty much includes activities like mixing, melting, and transferring the tart to and from the oven.

It takes around 40 minutes in total, and a confident baker will have no problem whatsoever!

What is Vegan Chocolate Tart Made Of?

We use just nine ingredients to make this vegan chocolate tart, which is separated into two main parts – the crust and the filling.

For the tart crust you will need:

  • Almond flour
  • Gluten-free flour
  • Sea salt
  • Vegan butter, cold and cubed
  • Water

For the chocolate filling you will need:

  • Dark chocolate chips
  • Coconut cream
  • Vegan butter
  • Maple syrup
  • Vanilla extract

To make this recipe sugar-free, simply substitute the maple syrup for monk fruit.

How to Make Vegan Chocolate Tart

To a food processor, add the almond flour, gluten-free flour, and salt, and pulse until combined. Add in the cubed vegan butter, and pulse again until the mixture is crumbly.

Then gradually add the water to the mixture, and pulse until a smooth dough is formed.

Transfer this dough onto a sheet of wax paper and use a rolling pin to flatten the mixture. Transfer this to the fridge to cool for about 15 minutes. Meanwhile, pre-heat your oven to 350°F.

When the dough has cooled, transfer it to an 8” tart tin. Flatten it out on the bottom and push it up the sides of the tin. Then pre-bake for 15 minutes.

Next, we move onto the chocolate filling. Start by melting the dark chocolate chips in a double boiler.

Add the coconut cream, vegan butter, maple syrup, and vanilla extract to the melted chocolate and, using a spatula, fold until perfectly incorporated. When ready, remove from heat and set aside.

After the tart crust has finished pre-baking, pour the chocolate mixture over the crust, and transfer it back into the oven to finish baking for a further 15 minutes.

When it’s ready, allow the tart to cool in the fridge until it’s ready to serve (preferably the following day, so it has sufficient time to firm up).

When you are ready to serve, remove the tart from the mold and enjoy!

Tips for the Best Vegan Chocolate Tart

When you are confident at making this tart, you can experiment with flavors. When mixing the chocolate filling ingredients, consider adding in a pinch of cinnamon, a shot of bourbon, some orange zest, or anything else that takes your fancy.

Before cutting, ensure the tart has had enough time to set. This will make the slices easier to cut.

This chocolate tart is ideal served with a scoop of vegan ice cream (you can also make your own) and fresh berries like raspberries, strawberries and blackberries for a sharp contrast to the rich ganache.

How to Tell if Chocolate is Vegan?

To make this vegan chocolate tart, you naturally need to use vegan chocolate. Luckily there are tons of options; many of which won’t be labeled as vegan.

Of course, you can head to your local vegan grocery store, and you’ll find loads of plant-based chocolates available.

Otherwise, a lot of dark chocolates are actually naturally vegan. Look for bars/drops with a cacao content of 50% or more, as this is usually (but not always) a sign that the chocolate is vegan.

The best way to tell is to look at the ingredients list on the packaging. If milk or lactose are listed as an ingredient, then steer clear.

However, if you see the words ‘cocoa butter’ then you are safe, as this is simply an edible fat extracted from cocoa beans, not dairy.
