What is Chocolate Fudge?

Homemade chocolate fudge is something that really needs no introduction. It’s a rich, sweet, and creamy treat that reminds you of being a kid again.

Making it vegan takes nothing away from it, as our recipe produces a melt-in-your-mouth texture with a moreish taste.

This creamy fudge makes the perfect sweet treat for the whole family, as well as a welcome edible gift for vegans and non-vegans alike.

Is Chocolate Fudge Vegan?

Traditionally, fudge is not vegan due to the demand for milk in the recipe.

Luckily, you don’t need milk to make our vegan chocolate fudge. We use coconut cream and vegan butter to deliver the smoothness and consistency this recipe requires.

Is this Vegan Chocolate Fudge Gluten-Free?

It sure is! Due to the five ingredients that we use, this vegan chocolate fudge is naturally gluten-free.

Is Vegan Chocolate Fudge Easy to Make?

Trust us, this recipe is super simple – anyone can make it! Because we use only five ingredients, there are less variables, leading to less things that could go wrong.

It only takes around 20 minutes to prepare, although allow six hours afterwards for the fudge to set properly. That’s the hardest part – waiting for it to set before you can dive in!

How to Make Vegan Chocolate Fudge

Start by adding both the chocolate chips and cashew butter to a double boiler. If you don’t have one, simply boil a couple inches of water in a saucepan, then place a heat-safe dish (in this case, a metal mixing bowl would be best – this is where the chocolate chips and cashew butter will go) over the saucepan. Feel free to add vegan butter to this mixture as well (optional) to help melt the chocolate chips.

Stir frequently until the chocolate melts, then add the remaining three ingredients. Your coconut cream should have the texture of slightly softened butter.

Fold everything together using a spatula until it is all smooth and well mixed. Then remove the mixture from the heat and set aside.

As it cools, grease a 9” x 9” brownie tin with oil or vegan butter, and line with baking paper. Pour the chocolate mixture into the tray and spread it evenly using the spatula or the back of a spoon.

Refrigerate the fudge for at least 6 hours, until it is firm to the touch. When it’s ready to serve, remove the fudge from the tray and cut it into 12 square pieces.

Tips for the Best Vegan Chocolate Fudge

If you want to experiment with flavorings, try adding the zest of an orange to make it a chocolate-orange fudge, or peppermint extract for a minty twist.

You can also add other things into the mixture, such as dried fruits (blueberries, cherries, and dates are great) or nuts for some added texture variation.

As for toppings, you may want to try adding chopped nuts, candy pieces, cacao nibs, or chocolate chips. If you do this, make sure the fudge has cooled to a slightly warm temperature. This will mean the toppings will stick to the fudge but won’t melt!

FAQ

How to Store Vegan Chocolate Fudge

When you have prepared your fudge, it is best to keep it stored in the refrigerator. If you put it in an airtight container, it will last for five days in the fridge.

Can You Freeze Vegan Chocolate Fudge?

It’s certainly best when freshly made, although it will freeze very well – for up to two months if stored in a freezer-proof container or bag. Simply take the fudge out of the freezer around five minutes before you are ready to eat it.

Can You Make Chocolate Fudge Ahead of Time?

Yes! It takes around six hours for the fudge to set, so you will need to make it ahead of time to some degree anyway. Then it will last for up to five days in the fridge.

How Long Does Chocolate Fudge Last?

Providing you don’t eat it all as soon as it’s ready (a definite possibility!), this vegan chocolate fudge will last for up to five days in the refrigerator.

Why is it So Hard to Make Fudge?

Old-fashioned fudge is historically difficult to make, and usually takes a bit of recipe perfecting before it turns out right. Many people complain of grainy, crumbly, or hard fudge that doesn’t quite hit the spot.

By following our simple five-ingredient fudge recipe, the risk is drastically reduced. By using so few ingredients, there is less that can go wrong, which means anybody can make this.

Just be patient and allow the fudge to set properly (for at least six hours) before slicing and serving.
