What is White Chocolate?

White chocolate can be traced back to 1936, when chocolate giants Nestl̩ introduced their white chocolate bar called Galak Рknown as Milkybar in other parts of the world. Soon after, other manufacturers followed suit.

As the name suggests, white chocolate is light in color, which is due to the lack of cocoa solids in the ingredients. It tends to be made with cocoa butter, sugar, and milk solids, sometimes with the flavoring of vanilla.

Can Vegans Eat White Chocolate?

Regular white chocolate is not vegan. This is because it is typically made using milk products.

Luckily, there are so many dairy substitutes nowadays, that replacing the milk products is easier than ever!

What is in Vegan White Chocolate?

Vegan white chocolate requires only a few ingredients, the main one being cacao butter.

If you’ve ever opened a bag of cacao butter, you’ll know it smells just like chocolate! But, as much as you want to taste it, it’s not nearly as delicious as it smells (when eaten on its own).

When mixed with the right ingredients, though… YUM. 🤤

For our plant-based white chocolate, we use the following ingredients:

Is This Vegan White Chocolate Gluten-Free?

Yes it is! There are just four ingredients required, none of which contain any gluten.

How to Make Vegan White Chocolate at Home

While there are store-bought options available, making vegan white chocolate at home allows you to be entirely in control of the ingredients.

All you have to do is add cacao butter to a saucepan, and melt it down with powdered monk fruit (a sugar-free sweetener), cashew butter, and vanilla extract.

Then transfer the mixture to any chocolate bar mold or chocolate truffle mold, and freeze it for at least 30 minutes!

Tips for the Best Vegan White Chocolate

As this recipe requires just four ingredients, there is nowhere to hide if an ingredient lacks quality! So use the best you can afford for each ingredient, which will result in a better flavor and end product.

When you feel confident with this recipe, you can experiment by adding in some other ingredients as the mixture is cooling.

Try adding chopped nuts, dried or freeze-fried fruit (dried apricots and strawberries go great with white chocolate!), edible petals, Oreo cookie crumbs, or even a pinch of salt to add complexity to the flavor.
