What is Egg Wash?

Traditional egg wash is nothing more than an egg and a dash of milk or cream, whisked up into a ‘wash’. This wash is used to brush onto either sweet or savory doughs and pastries before baking.

After being washed with this egg-milk mixture and a spell in the oven, baked goods will have a golden color and attractive shine.

Egg wash is also used like a glue to hold baked goods together, such as edges of a pie or tart.

Luckily all of the above is true for vegan egg wash too!

Is Egg Wash Vegan?

The name should be a giveaway! But just to confirm – no, traditional egg wash is not vegan, as it uses both egg and dairy milk. But just to be clear, this recipe is vegan.

Is this Vegan Egg Wash Gluten-Free?

It is! All three ingredients are entirely gluten-free.

Is Vegan Egg Wash Easy to Make?

Yes, incredibly easy. It’s simply a case of mixing all the ingredients together in a pan, and takes less than 5 minutes to prepare.

What is Vegan Egg Wash Made Of?

Just three ingredients (and one optional ingredient) is all it takes to make this recipe!

You will need the following:

  • Almond milk
  • Maple syrup
  • Vegan butter, unsalted
  • Turmeric powder, optional (for a bit of color)

How to Make Vegan Egg Wash

Place all the ingredients into a saucepan, and heat gently until the butter melts. Whisk until everything is incorporated.

Use a brush to apply the egg wash to your baked goods to achieve a golden color and shiny finish.

That’s all there is to it!

Tips for the Best Vegan Egg Wash

This recipe uses three simple ingredients, and all three are essential. However, you can make substitutes if required.

For example, the maple syrup can be substituted for agave syrup, and you can substitute the almond milk for soy or oat milk.

Note that the turmeric is only in the recipe to add extra color. If you choose to include it, you don’t need more than a pinch. Seriously, a small amount of turmeric goes a long way!
