Is Chocolate Mousse Vegan?

Sadly no – the majority of mousse is not vegan because it is made with heavy dairy cream and eggs.

Luckily our chocolate mousse is vegan! We use plant-based alternatives like firm silken tofu for the perfect consistency, with coconut milk and cashew butter to add creaminess.

What is this Easy Vegan Chocolate Mousse Made Of?

All you need to make this mousse is 7 easy ingredients!

This is your shopping list:

  • Firm silken tofu
  • Full-fat coconut milk
  • Monk fruit sugar
  • Cocoa powder, unsweetened
  • Cashew butter, unsalted
  • Vanilla extract
  • Salt

While this recipe is sugar free, you can use regular sugar or even a liquid sweetener instead of the monk fruit if you prefer.

How to Make Vegan Chocolate Mousse

Start by adding all the ingredients to a blender or food processor, then blend until smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides as necessary.

Next, divide this mixture into four ramekins, and refrigerate until the desired consistency is achieved (it will take at least 30 minutes). You are then ready to serve.

We told you it was easy! 🙌

How to Serve Vegan Chocolate Mousse

Now for the fun part! You can serve this vegan chocolate mousse on its own, or top it with a little dairy-free whipped cream, fresh berries, chocolate shavings, crushed nuts, or whatever else you’d like!

How to Thicken Vegan Chocolate Mousse

To achieve a thick chocolate mousse consistency, we recommend opting for firmer tofu or replacing the tofu with avocados.

If you use tofu, just know that the firmer the tofu, the thicker the mousse will be. The softer the tofu, the lighter the mousse will be.

Be sure to leave your mousse in the fridge to set for long enough. It should be in there for at least 30 minutes.

FAQ

How to Store Vegan Chocolate Mousse

Leftovers? No problem! Cover the mousse and store it in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Can You Freeze Vegan Chocolate Mousse?

We don’t recommend freezing this recipe, as tofu releases a lot of water when it’s thawed, so the consistency will likely change.

Which Kind of Tofu Should You Use for this Recipe?

We recommend using firm silken tofu for a mousse-like consistency. If you prefer a pudding-like consistency, you can use soft tofu.

Remember, the firmer the tofu, the thicker the mousse will be. The softer the tofu, the lighter the mousse will be. It comes down to preference!

Can You Use Avocado Instead of Tofu to Make this Vegan Chocolate Mousse?

Yes, you can swap the tofu for ripe Hass avocados in this recipe. However, the consistency and flavor will change a little.

Using tofu results in a pudding-like, silky smooth texture, and it’s lighter. Using avocado results in a thick and buttery consistency, and it’s heavier.

If you do decide to use avocado, I highly recommend using ripe Hass avocados as they don’t have a strong flavor. They are also more buttery and less watery than other kinds of avocados, so the texture will be great!

To replace one block of tofu, you can use about two average-sized Hass avocados to yield the same weight.

Prep time

minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 block firm silken tofu (340g)*

  • 1/2 cup full-fat coconut milk

  • 1/2 cup monk fruit sugar**

  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder, unsweetened

  • 2 Tbsp cashew butter, unsalted

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • Pinch of salt

Directions

  • Add all the ingredients to a blender or food processor, then blend until smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides as necessary.
  • Divide mixture into 4 ramekins, and refrigerate until the desired consistency is achieved (at least 30 minutes). Then serve.

Notes

  • *We recommend using firm tofu for a mousse-like consistency. I’ve used silken tofu (firm and extra firm), and other brands of medium firm tofu, all of which yield great results. If you prefer a pudding-like consistency, you can use soft tofu. The firmer the tofu, the thicker the mousse will be. The softer the tofu, the lighter the mousse will be. You can also replace the block of tofu with Hass avocados (same weight – approximately 2 Hass avocados).
  • **You can use regular sugar or even a liquid sweetener if you prefer.
